The id is the primal urges, primitive needs, and uncivilized passion we are born with. However, it’s interesting to see how Pi’s id (survival instincts) is powerful enough to take charge over the superego and ends up killing the fish for the two of them. The id, ego, and superego are Freuds representation of the three structures of the mind. He subconsciously knows that he should not be killing a live species due to religion, and also knows that he should not be eating fish (he is a vegetarian because of his religion). In this situation, his superego makes him hesitant to kill it. This could be the hidden meaning for Pi’s natural instincts.Īnother example is when Pi struggled with killing the fish for Richard Parker and himself to eat. If we do something wrong and we give in to our id the superego makes us feel guilty (Bennett, 2019 Berk, 2013 Feldman, 2014). The ego, id, and superego are three different parts of the mind that work together to create a person’s sense of self. By five or six years old we have formed our conscience as a result of our parents, teachers, and other important people around us. Freud believed that the id is based on our pleasure principle. The id is an important part of our personality because as newborns, it allows us to get our basic needs met. According to Freud, we are born with our Id.

It’s our conscience telling us to do the right thing. These three elements of personality, known as the id, the ego and the superego, work together to create human behaviors. In both the novel and the movie, Pi tells us that Richard Parker is the reason why he had a chance to survive. If the id is the devil the Superego is the angel. Richard Parker is Pi’s survival instincts (id), which we are all born with the moment we are born. Richard Parker is the one who kills the hyena, which is parallel to Pi killing the cook (another version of the story he tells to Japanese reports at the very end of the movie). Some researchers believe that Richard Parker, the tiger, is actually a symbolism of Pi’s id. This also shows what imbalance of personalities can do to us. Indeed, I must endure the threat from the outside world, the id and superego. There was no superego or ego that could have stopped it from killing the zebra. The ego is a poor creature, serving three masters. The hyena on the lifeboat is an example of id, because of how it killed the zebra due to hunger.
